Since I've gotten my newest car, I haven't driven my BMW 1M at all. And since I live in SF, I'm paying a pretty penny to garage it. So therefore I am considering selling it. It's a great car, but it just doesn't get used any more (not that I've driven it very much at all).

It's in perfect condition with under 5k miles, never tracked or raced. KBB says the value is just north of $60k for a private party sale (I had expected more like $65k but it's in the ballpark).

Kinja'd!!!

What say you oppo - sell or keep? (Mine is on the left.)

I'll give you $5 for it.

I can only see those gaining value, so if you can keep it a while longer I would be surprised if you can't get more than your $65k for it.

That is on my list of cars to buy should I win the lottery; the 1M and a Balboni Gallardo.

Sell it to me! I will pay you in 2017 for what you can give me today :) Seriously, It will be a while before we know whether or not the market control of the auto journalists worked, and this car is worth 4x more than you paid for it. So it's hard to say. I'd just say go with your gut and don't look back. My dad could have retired three times over if he had kept any of his first few cars. Instead he's working into his sixties. I've never seen a man with less regret in my life. It's all about your view of life.

I'm not a speculator - I bought this car because it was awesome, and I'm only considering selling it for space reasons. I always figure I'm better off investing in the stock market.

My father missed buying two Cobras, a 289 and a 427) for $7k (that's combined, not each) in 1969 from a guy whose wife told him he had to get rid of them and stop racing. He told me that story back in the 80s when they were starting to really shoot up in price, and when I made fun of him he said "when you were born in 1971 I would have had to sell them too". So there's that.

I definitely agree with no regrets.

KBB is not accurate for rare cars or special editions. It wouldn't hurt to ask for more. The 1M is an awesome car which holds its value well but maybe it would be good to sell before the M2 comes out.

All a matter of preference, I guess. Personally I'd rather have a 1M over any other car I can think of (when it comes to new-ish cars)....but then again I've never driven a Maserati :)

Is looking for cheaper storage elsewhere, even slightly outside the city, be worthwhile? No point if you genuinely don't drive it AT ALL anymore, I guess...but if storage is the only concern I'd consider this option.

Not worth holding on to it. If you don't drive it sell it. They have held their value. Yes the car will be worth more money in the future, but with an M2 around the corner and the depreciation cycle, that wouldn't be for 7-10 years (at best). By then it wouldn't be worth your time. Go for it, let someone else enjoy the car if you aren't. Then buy another toy.

ha, yes...we're all sitting here crying so, so hard for you :)

I'm sure you could find cheap storage around South SF, or even a bit further south along 101 - which would be 15 minutes away whenever you want the car. But it sounds like you're leaning towards selling it and it isn't a need-based decision, so I say go with what your heart says as long as you're not taking a huge financial hit either way.

I know a guy who just sold 2 stock 1969 SS Camaros. One had 500 miles on it and one had 15,000 miles on it, and he sold them for $150,000 and $100,000 respectively.

I know you aren't a speculator, but you do have the car. With under 1000 1M's in America, there is no question that this will be a desirable car for collectors in the years to come. Keep it, drive it every once in a while, and when the time comes to sell it, I bet you'll still come out on top despite the $$ you spend on storage and upkeep.

Yup, very similar stories with my dad. I only wish I could experience how great that car is. I'm in the camp of: If you don't use it, aren't keeping it for sentimental reasons or as an investment, I guess move on. At some point we have to remember cars are as much tools as they are relationships. If you own something you have zero use for, why have it when someone else could use it.

I make it a personal policy not to worry about anything that's less likely than being hit by a car while walking to work. But I agree with you that especially the Continental is very dangerous in accidents at higher speeds. The E9 has racing seats and shoulder belts.

I really feel like this is the type of car you'll miss forever if you sell it. It seems to be heading for the history books as a fantastic and rare car, so whatever you do, keep it.

You might suffer for it, but I think you'll only regret it forever if you sell it.

Sell, sell, sell. Sell it now for a premium and walk away happy.

Respectfully, I always thought these cars were terribly unattractive. Only a BMW car guy cares what it is, everyone else sees (erroneously) that you bought the cheapest BMW. I understand that they're rare but what is the reason for the rarity? Same thing as the Z3M coupe, they are rare because nobody bought them.

They could theoretically appreciate further, but if a light, much more attractive M2 comes out then this car loses its cachet.
